Do Not Mess With IRS Over Real Estate Rental Abroad

Some people have bought properties abroad during a Real Estate boom of 2000-2007. If they haven’t sold those properties, they often rent them, trying to recoup somehow an avalanche of unforeseen expenses related to the properties. In most cases, these people are pretty shy to show those rentals in their tax returns. They may be afraid of seeming complexity if reporting and lack of good records that would proof the validity of reported income and expenses related to rental properties. For that reason, the status of any tax refund would only become clear only some times into March, at the earliest. With the timeline in mind, it is advisable that taxpayers access the many income tax help facilities starting from end March/early April. If you happen to file your return later than mid April, it is not uncommon to wait at least 6 weeks before any meaningful help can be available.

Using Apple’s and Google’s Apps to Access IRS Services

As of January 2011, iPhone and Android Smartphone users can use the IRS2Go App to access their personal income tax information, tax tips and news from the Internal Revenue Service. This is a service designed and rolled out by IRS itself, not some 3rd party app developer, so there should have minimum security concern, but that is not necessarily the case.

Tax Refund Credited to Wrong Account through Direct Deposit

Question: If I have screwed up my savings account number while furnishing that information to the IRS to facilitate direct deposit arrangement, what would my chance be in recovering the tax refund back? I have been calling the IRS and bank regularly since then but the prospect does not look promising.  Does that mean I lost my $4000 refund forever? The income tax help facilities on IRS website are absolutely no help at all!

Plenty of Checks Not Delivered Due to Out-of-Date Addresses

Once again the IRS is issuing a statement reminding the public about the many unclaimed checks, due largely to wrong addresses.  It mentions that there are over 100,000 undelivered checks which are mostly income tax relief meant for the intended recipients.  This reminder to the public to update their addresses is timely as the checks will become void by the end of the winter.  However, the beneficiaries can claim the proceeds when they file the income tax return in 2012.
